Loulé
The irregular area bounded by the medieval city walls retains much of the atmosphere of days gone by. A walk through its narrow, twisting streets is full of delightful surprises: a pretty old house, an unexpected courtyard, or further on a church by an ancient gateway are some examples waiting your chance discovery. It is also worth looking around the part of the city that surrounds the old citadel. This is where craftsmen are to be found carrying on the age-old traditions, in workshops scattered among such enchanting spots as the Rua dos Arcos and the Bica Velha fountain, where the townswomen and water-carriers would come to draw water in days gone by. However a visit to Loulé does not end here. Don´t miss the the market, built in the Moorish style fashionable at the beginning of the 20th century, with its colorful sights and bustling ambience, the several churches and chapels, which often conceal unexpectedly fine works of art or the Praça da República and other streets where the rich bourgeoisie showed off their wealth in the exuberant and fantastic architecture of their houses.
